Do you use chemical-free cleaning products? Not only is it better for the environment but it is exceptionally gentle on the skin! If you're like me and suffer from eczema, you will appreciate these products. Dish washing used to irritate my hands and I never enjoyed having to use gloves. Too bad I couldn't delegate the dish washing chore to the cleaning fairy! My usual dish liquid of choice was the famous brand known to "cut grease" but it was wreaking horrible havoc on my hands! I started experimenting with different dish liquids that were certified organic or labeled natural (stick with plant-based ingredients) and discovered the band
Ecover. They also make dishwasher tablets, non-chlorine bleach, laundry detergent, glass cleaner, and much more. If you cannot find it at a local whole food store, order it online (just click on the word "Ecover" visit the website). I lucked up and found it at a Marshall's store on discount so naturally I bought all they had. Oh and there is an Earth Fare supermarket in Huntersville N.C. now! Ecover also makes their bottles out of plants and that equals to 100% recyclable. Cleaning doesn't have to involve harsh chemicals. There are tons of ideas out there, such as baking soda paste that will work wonders on silver, pots and pans, and coffee pot carafes. Also, try a half of a lemon stamped in sugar or salt, which will shine a lot of things (especially copper pots).
Eco laundry detergent is also a big plus. As many clothes as we wash and as much soapy water that gets drained to who-knows-where, it's worth the investment. I like Seventh Generation and you can find it in a lot of grocery stores.
If you think you cannot afford to buy organic or natural products, go online for coupons and just start with one item in your cleaning stock pile, like your dish liquid soap.
