We depend on the government and other organizations to ensure that we have things like clean drinking water, BPA-free products, certifications for organic made products, safe food handling, and so on. The recent battle? Chemicals in products such as shampoo, lotion, makeup... and most recently, concerns of what ingredients are going into our foods. I am sure plenty of people could care less. I choose to care, and so I do just a little to keep myself informed. Take the time! Humor yourself on your next shopping trip and read a few labels. My favorite question, can you pronounce most of the ingredients? Also, do you know what pesticides are used on the apples, grapes, strawberries, and celery that you eat, which is entirely absorbed since they have delicate or no skin. Buy those from the organic section only! I realize most people will say that we are not literally dropping dead from these choices and that we have eaten it for decades; so forth and so what. Maybe we aren't dropping dead... now. But how many people do you know who have some sort of health issue - most of which are chronic issues? And our kids... what are the bulk of their meal choices these days? McDonald's and sodas. Gotta love that. Natural News has some worthy reading material about that.
I just recently read again that scientists have found certain insecticides in the umbilical cord blood of pregnant women and in our bloodstreams (Just Label It, 2011). Visit that link and read more. The safety concerns are an ongoing issue. And as usual, we "beg" the FDA to crack down. Until things move forward, focus on organic fruits and vegetables. The link also gives you some simple shopping guide resources and you can have a voice! I added it to my links here on my blog, and I have others, see Research & Education.
Jen,
ReplyDeleteI just love this. These are such good reminders that maybe with a little open-mindedness and willingness to do a little homework, we can be lots better citizens of our own bodies. . .You go girl!
